Typing. Speed and accuracy.

For years I wish I had trained myself to be a better typist. I am afraid I might be so used to typing incorrectly, it might be nearly impossible to retrain myself correctly. Here is the score I got today.

Found a free online typing test.  http://www.typingtest.com/
I am curious how well others do on the test. Like my 96% accuracy but I am going to put forth effort to improve. I like to challenge myself.

It only takes one minute and it grades for speed and and deducts for accuracy. Errors in accuracy used top be pulling the paper out, crumpling the page, putting a fresh paper in the typewriter and starting all over again. Obviously a skill that was detrimental to the performance of the office employee. Now, with modern word processors and computers, the paper/pages can be viewed, edited, saved, emailed, and printed. Heck, a dictionary is not even necessary to spell check because the computer is an awesome machine and does it for you.

  1. I wouldn't worry to much about it, I know many people even computer people like ourselves that do the two finger peck. I believe it it gets the job done then you are doing it right. I use a typing tutor called Two Thumbs you should check it out.

    2. I did go to Two Thumbs and found that it is for phone typing on a QWERTY keypad. Which made the name Two Thumbs make much more sense.

    4. Can anyone recommend a typing program/game for kids/teenagers to build proper typing skills? My kids use computers at school, but they are not taught technique, they just hunt and peck. I discourage this but it's what everyone else does, you know how that goes...

  2. I used to be able to type at a solid 80 wpm regularly but have since gone down to the upper 60s as a result of becoming involved in computer graphics work as opposed to office work.

However, I managed that 80 wpm with three fingers on each hand (using my ring finger to cover what the little finger would usually do and using my index fingers to push the spacebar). There isn't really an "incorrect" way to type, just to whatever comes natural to you and practice that.

    1. That is a pretty fast typing speed for six fingers. I'm very impressed with that. I believe my problem is I think I need to look at the keyboard, it really slows me down, especially if I am coping something, I'll have to keep looking back and forth.

  3. I learned to type in a high school class in the business program of a vocational high school. It was certainly one of the most valuable skills that has carried with me throughout my career. Time is money! If you can type quicker, you can get more done in a shorter amount of time and move on to the next project. I am concerned for my children who think it is okay to hunt and peck. I found a typing tutor that incorporates a game into the learning. It seems to me that the best learning strategy is memorization, just muscle memory learned from repetition. I used to practice the alphabet in ABC order on the keyboard. Anyone with suggestions on good quality typing programs suitable for kids ages 8 to 15, I would greatly appreciate your feedback. Thanks in advance :)

  4. My Wps are extremely high but I have the tendency to rely on auto correct to fix my typing errors, Its something I have to pay more attention to

  5. I have to look at the keys, that makes my overall wpm much slower than it should be. Very huge bad habit.

  6. Thank you very much for the link! I have not tested my typing skills in years, and found found that I type 82 wpm. I believe that I type the standard way, since I was taught to type by a teacher at my middle school. I also had one of my coworkers take this test. She has always been a two finger hunt and pecker, and scored 56 wpm.
